Zachary Quinto Admits He's Gay
48Zachary Quinto, known for his roles as Spock in Star Trek (2009) and Sylar in Heroes.
Zachary Quinto is the latest Hollywood star to come out of the closet.
After years of avoiding questions and dodging rumours about his sexuality, Star Trek star Zachary Quinto has finally admitted to being gay. In an interview with New York Magazine, Quinto casually interjects that "as a gay man", he thinks that society has a long way to go when it comes to improving gay rights and eliminating discrimination.
Unfortunately, it was a tragic suicide of a gay teenager that prompted Quinto to take this step. In a recent spate of gay suicides due to bullying, teenager Jamey Rodemeyer's story moved Quinto to "indescribable despair" and was "the catalyst for change" within him.
"It became clear to me in an instant that living a gay life without publicly acknowledging it is simply not enough to make any significant contribution...to complete equality."
It remains to be seen how this announcement will affect his career. But in this day and age, with major civil rights movements in the first world resulting in equal rights for people of all races and genders, it is absurd that something as inconsequential as one's sexuality should have an impact at all. It was only last month, in September 2011, that 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' was finally abolished. Gay marriage is still legally impossible in the majority of the western world. Quinto recognises that "we are at the precipice of great transformation" and has a wish of "serv(ing) as the same catalyst for even one other person in this world". Hopefully, Quinto's wish will be fulfilled, in a future where people are accepted and treated equally, no matter their race, gender or sexual orientation.
